Uhh Oo, The Giants Are Here!

Don't be scared these giants won't hurt you.  They're actually here to help!  The Roadway Giants first began in 1913 when the Lincoln Highway was put into full effect.  These giant structures were created to pull in travelers that were driving back and forth past local businesses and stores.  Check out this guy located by the Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce building right off of Route 30...

Pretty cool, huh?  Check out the 1940s Bennett Gas Pump and the Bicycle Built for Two at http://www.lhhc.org/giants.asp.  Visit this site to find out where all of the local giants are hiding!

Convenience At Its Finest

At the crossing of Route 819, Pine Street, and Reamer Avenue drivers will find the most convenient convenience store there is.  I'm talking about Four Corners, of course!

I thought it would be appropriate to list the top four most convenient things someone could do at Four Corners... So, here goes...

1. The most obvious (and something I know I do) - Buy the most delicious pepperoni rolls ever to exist
2. Mail a love letter
3. Talk to your neighbor

And last, but not least... Drum roll, please....

4. Play the lotto, duh

Sheesh, that's a whole lot of convenient if you ask me!

Home Of The Bobcats

The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg is the home of the almighty Bobcats.  You can even check out their website to prove it... http://www.greensburg.pitt.edu.

But, wait... Most would ask "What's a bobcat?"

No, it's not a tiger, or a wolverine, or a leopard.

It's simply a North American wildcat that has a feisty attitude, keen eye, and is highly territorial, of course.  They may look something like this...

However, although we are located in North America (for those of you out there who didn't know already know this), the one that protects UPG's campus looks something like this...

Come find him at the end of Finoli Drive, I dare you.  Come on, don't be a scaredy cat!

Old Beauty

Ohh hey Ms. Courthouse, how beautiful you are!  I can see you from almost every vantage point throughout Greensburg.  Your beauty is seen at all the times, however my favorite times to see you are during sunrise and sunset.  No offense to you if you feel these aren't your strongest moments.  Since being erected for the fourth time in 1906, everyone is just in awe of your gorgeous features.  I don't think my photo does you justice, no pun intended.  However, I had to show you off somehow!

This is my favorite vantage point... What's yours?

Do A Double Take

Everyone knows that Greensburg is filled with older styled buildings and some truly beautiful architecture.  One of the most beautiful buildings, in my opinion, would be the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral located downtown.

If you look closely at the detail that is put into the archways, columns, and brickwork, it is truly amazing.  Here are some other views...

Now for my most favorite part of all.  Above the entry way of the front of the cathedral is a beautifully worked circular piece of stone.  From afar you may not notice the detail...

Yea, see I told you you wouldn't.  And don't blame it on the awkwardly positioned cars either.  Look closer...

Ahh, now that's what I call beautiful! :)

What's On Today's Menu?

So I'm sitting in Starbucks with a close girlfriend just enjoying the time.  Taj Mahal's Corinna is playing in the background as I stuff my face with a cinnamon crunch bagel with extra cream cheese from Panera, and I realize something.  This is one of my favorite things to do... just enjoy the time.

Okay, okay... And enjoy the biggest size frappuccino I can buy and use up every last bit of the cream cheese from the bottom of the container.  I mean tell me it doesn't look good!!

Besides planning to have the most indulgent midday snack ever, most of all I planned on being present in the time instead of speed walking through it.  Think about something that you truly enjoy doing or maybe something that you love that you haven't done in while.  Now, put that on your menu!

Old Or New, We All Need 'Em

I made a new friend today, and I'm really excited about it... She's a very pretty girl, just a little older than me.  And hey, she even helped me out of my car!  I asked for a picture, but she was a bit camera shy.  I snuck two quick ones anyway.  And here she is...

How cute is she?! I couldn't help but to think of George Elliot's quote - "Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms."  If only Elliot's quote held true to everyone, now that would be a miracle!

What are some of your favorite quotes about friendship, animals, or just anything you like??

Let's Chill Tonight

Okay everyone, it's Friday and I don't know about you, but I want to relax.  Let's grab burgers, fries, and a few drinks, and just enjoy the time.

I know, I know... Everyone has a Red Robin, but it's one of my favorites!  I mean how many restaurants do you know that use shredded lettuce instead of a full leaf?? It's perfection.  These two people got burgers and they seemed to love them, too.  On another note, you can't beat the million of homey knickknacks they have on the walls either.

One word... Yummmm!!

I Spy With My Little Eye...

One of the best views in Greensburg, duh!!  Take a look...

Towards the top of North Main Street there is a small overpass that serves as a break between buildings.  It also allows train tracks to pass underneath. But most importantly, it gives an amazing view for those who walk the streets of downtown.

Tell me, what are some of your favorite views around the city??

Welp, Maybe Not Today...

The weatherman told me it's 26 degrees today, but only feels like it's 17 degrees.  Taking this into consideration (and the fact that I had to freeze my butt off walking outside), I don't think I'll be seeing any bikers around Greensburg.  I'm almost hoping I don't because I'm afraid of what the wind burn will look like on their faces.. OUCH!!

Intersection Artwork

Look what I found on the corner of South Pennsylvania Avenue and West Second Street .... And no, it's nothing illegal!

Created on the side of a building, this mural is left to stand alone.  There were no store fronts beside it and only parking meters in front.  Here's a closer look.....

Too bad there aren't more pieces like this lining the streets... Do any of you know where more of these are hiding??

Where The Imagination Runs Wild

I saw these drawings today on the front windows of Pottery Playhouse located in downtown Greensburg.  The owner hand paints these wonderful scenes and characters freestyle, following the rhythm of her own imagination.

The scenes are painted directly onto the outside of the store windows.  How cool is that!  Keep an eye out for new artwork coming soon.  The scenes seem to change every few weeks.  Simply AMAZING!

First Stop Is...

The good ol' UPG… Or should I say the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.  I thought this should be the first place I would mention on my blog because after all this is where my journey in Greensburg began (Hopefully you get the parallel) I have a few favorite views of the campus and this is one of them.

I swear, sunshine, rain, snow, or fog this view has always been beautiful!  If you haven’t see it for yourself please swing through campus!

And So It Begins...

Welcome to my blog all about Greensburg, PA!  In 109 days I will be graduating from the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, so I figured why not document different places or things that for some reason or another caught my eye or captured my heart.

Not only does this allow me to show all that Greensburg has to offer, but it gives me the opportunity to explore the city a little bit more.  Who knows, maybe you will recognize or have enjoyed some of the same things that I have.  And if you have any favorites of Greensburg, please don't hesitate to share!

So, join me on my journey and by all means enjoy the ride...
